Oh, I live a secret second life in which I am dapper as all get out. I can tie a bow tie, friends, almost as well as I can tie my slim black tie in a neatly disheveled four-in-hand. The only thing left is to find that perfect tie accessory. These are my favorite masculine accessories, the classy kind. Cufflinks, tie bars, tie clasps, the whole shebang. With the explosion in retro styling from the success of shows and movies, most notably “Mad Men,” picking out classic mens accessories has become a more rewarding experience.
Just a word of wisdom to start: beware tie tacks. They poke a hole into your ties and after repeated use, this can cause visible damage and even unraveling. If you want to use a tie tack, put it on a magnet instead. Myself, I prefer a monogrammed tie bar. You can find blanks fairly cheap online and get them engraved at your favorite jewelry store. They come in a variety of metals, obviously, but I prefer stainless steel. It's sturdy, shiny, and easily polished.
I prefer to match my tie accessories to my wrist accessories. I like the tiny spark of uniformity in my own mix and match wardrobe. I really prefer that bit of coordination, but it's just as easy and eye-catching to find two pieces that complement each other very easily. Don't be afraid to search through estate jewelry, either, to find that truly retro statement.
